Back in 1985 the domains .org., .com, .net, .gov and .edu were released .ORG being seen as the most credible and trustworthy domain for non-profit organisations and charities. This month the Public Interest Registry launched the new .NGO (non-governmental organisation) and .ONG (non-governmental organisation) in countries where a romance language is spoken i.e., Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian.
In the USA there are over 6 million .org domains registered, but only 1.5 million of them are non profits, meaning that 4.5 million of those .org domains registered are not specifically being used by non-profit organisations. This is where the new domains of NGO and ONG are going to make a difference. Only legally recognised NGOs and ONGs, charities and non profit organisations will be able to register these domains, and there will be a strict validation process put into place.
There is a lot of competition for these domains and the sooner you register your first choice of domains, the better protected your organisations online brand!
